SEO Secrets: Why you need it for your business
Just over a year ago, I began my marketing career as a Digital Apprentice at Full Fat, and I could write a book with everything I’ve learned so far! I’ve been lucky enough to assist with several campaigns for brands such as Atopia, Nexba, and FULFIL, and I’ve met a team of wonderful people along the way. I love sharing my pearls of wisdom, and recently as part of my apprenticeship, I’ve been learning all about the world of SEO.
WHAT IS SEO?
The digital world has been thriving these past couple of years, and there’s no stopping it.
Businesses have been forced to move online, and grow from there. We all know that the internet is a powerful tool, but did you know that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the root of all of your online searches? And it’s why you can find things on Google as quickly as you do? By definition, SEO is “the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic to a website or a web page from search engines through unpaid traffic rather than direct traffic or paid traffic.”
Sound wordy? I thought so too, at first. Let’s break it down a bit. SEO is a clever and effective way of optimizing your website traffic and ranking on the Google search engine results page. Simply put; better SEO means a better chance of being found sooner online, meaning more traffic to your website and which can lead to bookings, sales, and so much more.
Factors that affect SEO can be split into two sections; on-page SEO, and off-page SEO. On-page SEO, namely, relates to all the content on your website that will affect your SEO, whereas off-page SEO relates to all the background, off-website factors.
Some on-page factors include:
Picture size
Load time
Keywords
Updated content
Some off-page factors include:
Backlinks
Social media mentions
Branded searches
HOW DO I IMPROVE MY SEO?
To know how to improve your SEO score, you first need to know what you’re missing. There are plenty of tools online that will tell you the aspects of your website that you can improve. Some personal favourites of mine are Seobility.net, SEMrush, and SEOsitecheckup.
These websites will break down your SEO score, and inform you on what you can improve and how to implement these changes. But how do you keep track of your results?
An easy and efficient way to keep track is Google Analytics, of course! Don’t skip ahead, it’s not as scary as you may think! It can tell you a lot about the users who have visited your site, for how long, and what they did. There are plenty of online courses and videos to help you navigate the platform plus fully understand the analytics and reports you're being provided with. A personal favourite of mine is Neil Patel’s YouTube channel, a British entrepreneur and marketing whizz with plenty of useful videos to indulge in.
WHY IS SEO IMPORTANT?
Perfect pictures and captivating content is what Google likes to see. Keeping these elements up to date will drive customers to your website and upping your ROI. Aside from being the easiest and cheapest way to drive traffic to your website, having a high SEO score ensures that your website has everything it needs to succeed. And if you want to learn how to offer SEO services, well, you could be sitting a goldmine.
