Diversity, equality and inclusion update

Last summer, we made a commitment to share our continued progress towards better diversity and inclusion as an agency.

We have undertaken an internal overhaul to ensure ongoing progress and transparency. The last six months have been dedicated to further education, with company-wide training sessions from incredible external bodies, such as The Other Box and #DoTheWork, internal bias training and KPI driven reading lists.

In addition, we’ve also created the company’s first Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Committee (DEI) to help the agency deliver its commitments both internally and externally, and create an open space for employees to raise queries and ideas. This committee will help to further foster an equitable, inclusive and diverse culture.

The committee works closely with the senior management team but is a separate entity, made up of employees at various levels with diverse backgrounds.

As part of our employment reshape we’ve also revised our hire process by updating our job application forms to better measure the diversity of talent we attract and have taken steps to actively encourage a more diverse team by working with recruiters such as Taylor Bennett Foundation, UK Black Comms Network and People Like Us. We have already made hires through this network which is a great start.

Alongside implementing an extensive DEI library, employees have also been given opportunities to address internal and external issues through surveys with the confidence that there is always an open door for any discussions.

Following our pro-bono work with amazing surplus food redistribution charity, Compliments of the House, we will begin our new phase of pro-bono charity work through our work with The Vavengers. We’ll raise awareness of female genital mutilation and its founders, ahead of supporting their March campaign that will shine a spotlight on the inequalities non-white women face within healthcare.

Survivor and community-led, The Vavengers work tirelessly to empower, educate, inform and protect, with a leading ethos that fighting FGM is the responsibility of everyone. Far from a dated practice, FGM sadly happens regularly across the world. Here in the UK an NHS report stated that 5,391 newly recorded cases of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) were reported in England during 2016-17.

We are so proud to be working with such an incredible, and unfortunately necessary charity, and are looking forward to giving the voices behind the organisation a platform.

For more information on The Vavengers, the phenomenal work they do, and to donate, visit their website www.thevavengers.co.uk.

We’ll be revealing details of the next scheme in the coming weeks for any other charities that would like to explore working with us.

The DEI committee is now planning for 2021 activity, mapping out further initiatives to help drive the business’ commitments even further and implementing measurements to track its progress and goals. We will also be working with colleges and universities to facilitate paid internships to support our already successful apprenticeship programme.

We’ll share a further update in the summer!
